Tulips in Provence: my go-to spring photo spot (Vaucluse)

Home » My Diary » Tulips in Provence

If I say “tulips,” what comes to mind? Bright petals? The Netherlands? Maybe Tulip Mania in the 17th century?

Tulips in Provence: a colourful surprise with a Ventoux view

Me—I think of Jonquières in Provence: neat rows of colour bursting to life each spring, with Mont Ventoux floating on the horizon.

Yes, you can find tulips in Provence—actual tulip fields, even.

The first time I found these plots, I dropped my bag, took a deep breath and thought: “I have to share this place with my couples.”

Each year—usually late March to early April depending on the weather—one plot opens to the public for just a few days. It’s short, it’s ephemeral, and that’s exactly what makes it special.

A fleeting experience worth capturing

This is in Vaucluse, in Jonquières near Orange. A Dutch grower cultivates four plots of tulips (around 20 hectares in total). Every spring, for about ten days, one of these plots becomes accessible to visitors.

For us locals, it’s a refreshing change from lavender or olive groves—just as beautiful, but with a different energy.

You can wander between the rows, soak up the warmth of the colours and—of course—take photos. With the Ventoux behind you, the scene feels almost painted.

Why I keep going back in spring

  • Incredible colours that naturally shape the composition.

  • Mont Ventoux as a backdrop for depth—and that unmistakable Provençal feel.

  • A graphic playground that stands out from lavender/olive classics—perfect for engagements, couple sessions, or a day-after.

Where & when (straight talk)

  • Location: Jonquières, Vaucluse, near Orange (about 40 minutes from Avignon).
  • Public access: roughly 10 days at peak bloom.
  • Timing: I monitor the bloom and ping my couples as soon as the colours pop (the window shifts year to year).

Pro tip: aim for golden hour (early morning or late afternoon) for soft light and gentle skies.

What a session with me feels like

Natural guidance and genuine laughter

We meet on site and walk along the aisles (always respecting the rows). I guide you into natural poses, we play with the leading lines, and we frame the Ventoux when the sky opens up.

Playing with tulip lines and light

My goal: that you enjoy the moment—we laugh, stroll, breathe—while I handle the rest.

Outfits & handy tips

  • Colours: creams, beige, pastels, classic denim—perfect with tulips.
Skip: heavy patterns that fight with the stripes of colour.
Shoes: it’s farmland—closed, comfy shoes are best.
Weather: a touch of mist = dreamy; cool wind = bring a light jacket.
  • Respect: stay in the aisles—no picking.

What I love to photograph here

Real emotions among vibrant colours

A quick glance down a corridor of colour, a hand brushing the petals, a kiss facing the Ventoux… Images that are both minimal (lines, tones) and alive (your gestures, your laughter).

Clean lines, soft light, and sincere gestures

A strong setting that keeps you at the centre—no gimmicks.
