A Provence Wedding Photographer’s Nightmare

A strange dream before a wedding in Provence

Have you ever wondered what a wedding photographer’s nightmare might look like?
You might imagine a dead battery, a forgotten memory card, or – even worse – not waking up on the morning of the wedding.

As for me, I once had a rather unusual experience. And since Halloween is just around the corner, it seems like the perfect time to share it with you.

When a dream feels too real

The last wedding of the season in Provence

A perfect plan for the final wedding of the year

It was my last wedding of the season – a beautiful season filled with laughter, tears, dancing, and plenty of emotion (and cake!).

To end on a gentle note, it was a small, intimate wedding: just a few hours for the civil ceremony at Eyragues town hall, some couple and group photos at the Parc des Poètes, followed by an aperitif and lunch at Le Bouchon en Provence.

A calm, easy end to a busy summer of weddings.

Everything ready for a peaceful day

As usual, everything was ready: batteries charged, memory cards formatted, camera bag packed, car fuelled, and the day’s schedule confirmed with the bride.

“All set!” as we say.

The photographer’s nightmare

Except… the night before the wedding, I had a nightmare.

Nothing too dramatic, you might think. After all, I’m a grown man – I don’t exactly wake up crying because of bad dreams anymore. (Well… except that one time I dreamt I was stopping people from entering an airport while wearing nothing but one single sock – on my foot, thankfully! I still laugh about that one.)

The dream that turned into chaos

But this dream was different.

In it, I was shooting a wedding – and absolutely everything was going wrong.

Missed key moments, blurry photos, disappointed newlyweds… in short, Murphy’s law applied to wedding photography.

A small detail: this dream was a replay of a real wedding I had photographed a few months earlier – a joyful, relaxed day I had already written about on my blog.
Except this time, in the dream, everything turned into chaos.

When stress follows you into your sleep

And the worst part? Every time I went back to sleep, the nightmare continued.

The morning of the wedding: anxiety and strong coffee

The uneasy wake-up

When my alarm finally went off – what a relief!

But I woke up tense, nervous, and slightly panicked. It left me in such a state that I left home later than I should have, arriving at the town hall just minutes before the ceremony began.

Not exactly my proudest moment of professionalism – one traffic jam on the motorway and I’d have been late.

When your mind plays tricks on you

On the road, my mind played tricks on me:

“What if I’m going to the wrong town? What if it’s the wrong date? What if it’s not even the right wedding?”

Thankfully, my equipment was the one thing I didn’t worry about. Preparing your gear in advance really is the key to peace of mind.

The moment of truth

When I arrived, the couple weren’t there yet – only the guests were waiting.
Cue a wave of internal panic.

Had I gone to the wrong wedding? How could I be sure?

The guests told me they were there for Marion and Stanislas – but what if there were other Marions and Stanislases getting married that same day? Highly unlikely, sure… but at that moment, my imagination ran wild.

A few minutes later, the groom arrived. Relief!

As soon as I recognised his smile, the tension melted away.

Finally, I could focus on what I love most: capturing genuine emotions.

A day full of emotions – and a happy ending

From panic to joy

And what a wedding it turned out to be!

The couple were glowing, the families deeply moved, and tears were flowing everywhere – a true gift for a wedding photographer.

Usually, one family is more emotional than the other, but that day, everyone was swept up in the moment.

By the time I left, I was laughing as I told the bride about my nightmare.

In the end, the photos turned out beautifully, the couple were thrilled, and they even left me the best review I’ve ever received.

So yes – sometimes a rough start can lead to a wonderful day! But let’s not make it a habit for the next wedding, shall we? 😅
