Where to plan a beach photoshoot near Marseille?
A few weeks ago, I published an article explaining why a beach photoshoot is such a great idea, whether for a couple photoshoot, engagement photos, a pre-wedding session, or even a Day After shoot. What I hadn’t explained yet was where exactly to plan this kind of seaside photoshoot. Because not every beach is suitable for a romantic photo session, especially when you’re looking for soft light, a natural atmosphere, and timeless images.
What you need to consider for a successful beach photoshoot
Before choosing the perfect location for your couple or wedding photoshoot, let’s go through the key elements you should keep in mind.
The position of the sun: a key factor for your photos
Unlike a classic photoshoot in the city or in the countryside—where you can play with shadows, trees or buildings—there is no cheating at the beach: there is nothing between you and the sun.
This means that a successful beach photoshoot can only take place at sunrise or sunset, when the light is soft, flattering, and ideal for romantic couple photos or wedding-inspired images.
The orientation of the beach
To truly make the most of this beautiful light, the orientation of the beach is crucial.
- West-facing beaches: the absolute ideal. The setting sun is directly in front of you, creating spectacular sunsets, perfect for engagement sessions or elopement-style photoshoots.
- South-facing beaches: the sun is less frontal, but the sky remains stunning and allows for warm, gentle atmospheres.
- East-facing beaches: here, you’ll need to wake up early. Very early.
In return, sunrise offers a magical atmosphere, perfect for intimate photos, far from the crowds.
North-facing beaches? As a photographer based in Provence, I honestly have no idea. Here, we only ever look at the Mediterranean from one side!
Crowds: planning ahead
Another essential factor for a seaside photoshoot is crowd management. A beach doesn’t need to be completely empty, but it’s important to be able to move freely and maintain a minimum level of privacy, so you can stay focused on your connection, your emotions, and your chemistry as a couple.
This is especially important for natural couple photography or a pre-wedding shoot, where the bond between you truly makes the images.
Where to plan a beach photoshoot in Provence?
Now that you know what to look for, here are a few beaches in Provence, tested and approved during previous couple photoshoots.
The Prado beaches in Marseille
The Prado beaches benefit from a perfect west-facing orientation, with a direct view of the sun setting into the Mediterranean. An ideal backdrop for romantic couple photos, with Marseille as a stunning setting behind you.
That said, during July and August, these beaches are far too busy for a relaxed photoshoot.
From September to early June, however, they become a great option for a couple session, engagement shoot or Day After photoshoot—and can even work on your wedding day itself.
Les Goudes coves, south of Marseille
At the very southern end of Marseille, Les Goudes offer a landscape of wild Mediterranean coves, facing west—the best possible orientation for light.
The area is relatively accessible, with parking available. Please note, however, that access may be restricted during periods of high fire risk.
This is not a sandy beach but a rocky cove, so for comfort, be sure to bring suitable footwear.
Calanque du Mugel in La Ciotat: my sunrise favourite
Let’s head east to La Ciotat to discover Calanque du Mugel, one of the most beautiful locations in the region for a couple photoshoot in Provence. With its deep blue water, red rocks, and lush vegetation, the scenery is simply breathtaking.
The two small beaches fill up quickly—but they have one “flaw”: they are east-facing. Which means… sunrise only.
Yes, it’s early. Very early. Painfully early.
But the reward is incredible: an empty cove, magical light, and a peaceful atmosphere—perfect for intimate, poetic images, ideal for an engagement session or a Day After shoot.
Portissol Beach in Sanary-sur-Mer
Let’s leave the Bouches-du-Rhône and head into the Var, to Sanary-sur-Mer. Portissol Beach faces west, making it perfect for sunset photos and dramatic skies.
It has the advantage of offering both a sandy beach and rocky coves, allowing you to easily move between different looks. As a bonus, there’s a small jetty with a ladder—ideal for creative and original images.
One small downside during my visit: seaweed on the sand. I can’t say whether this is a regular issue, but it led us to focus mainly on the cove area and the jetty for the shoot.
Les Lecques Beach in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer: the safe bet
If I had to choose just one beach, it would be Les Lecques in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer, without hesitation.
It has all the advantages and none of the drawbacks.
It’s very large, so you never feel overwhelmed by crowds. It offers golden sand with a small rocky area, and it faces south—making it suitable for both sunrise and sunset sessions.
Les Lecques is a reliable choice, perfect for a couple or engagement photoshoot, a Day After by the sea, or even a photoshoot on your wedding day.
