Why have an engagement session before your wedding?

An engagement session, sometimes also called an engagement shoot, is a couple photoshoot before the wedding. It is, of course, a chance to create beautiful images of the two of you, in a carefully chosen setting, with flattering light and a natural approach. But that is not all it is for.

This session is also a genuine step in preparing for your wedding. It allows you to experience being photographed together for the first time, understand my way of working more clearly, feel more confident about how you look in photographs, and approach the wedding day with greater peace of mind. It is also an opportunity to create images you can use for your invitations, wedding website or certain elements of your décor.

In Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Toulon, and more widely across Provence, an engagement session also gives you a great deal of freedom. We can imagine a session by the sea, in a Provençal village, among the vines, or somewhere that genuinely means something to you. In this article, I will explain what an engagement session is, why it can be such a good idea before the wedding, and how it differs from a classic couple photoshoot.

What is an engagement session?

An engagement session is, quite simply, a couple photoshoot before the wedding. We meet in a location that is beautiful, that feels like you, or that holds meaning for you, at a time chosen carefully so that we can enjoy the best possible light.

The session usually lasts between one and two hours. We walk together through the location we have chosen, and of course I guide you throughout the session so that you feel comfortable and look natural. But I also pay close attention to photographing what matters most: your spontaneous gestures, your glances, your smiles, all those small moments when you forget I am there and you are simply happy, together, in your own little world.

What is the difference between an engagement session and a classic couple photoshoot?

The difference between an engagement session and a classic couple photoshoot is that the engagement session is fully part of your wedding plans in Provence. It is usually included in the collection you have chosen, but above all, it is a very real first step towards your wedding photographs. It allows you to get to know your photographer in real conditions, discover how I work, and approach your couple portraits on the wedding day much more calmly.

What is an engagement session actually for before the wedding?

Planning an engagement session six months to a year before your wedding offers several advantages. Of course, it gives you beautiful photographs of your relationship, but it also helps you prepare practically for the wedding day, gives you images to use for your invitations or wedding stationery, helps you feel more at ease with your photographer, and allows you to build confidence in front of the camera.

Creating beautiful memories of your relationship

This is, of course, the most obvious reason: to have beautiful photographs of the two of you. Professional images with thoughtful composition, flattering light, and a result that genuinely feels like you. A lovely way to preserve your relationship in the best possible conditions, even before the wedding day itself.

Using your photographs for your invitations and wedding stationery

You are probably planning to send invitations to your guests. Of course, you can choose an illustrated or graphic design, but you can also use a photograph of the two of you. The images created during your engagement session can also find their place on your wedding website, in certain decorative details, or within your wedding stationery on the day itself. There is something especially personal, consistent and elegant about using your own professional photographs to make your wedding feel even more intimate.

Feeling more at ease with your photographer on the wedding day

One of the benefits of an engagement session that people do not always think about is that it can genuinely reduce your stress on the wedding day.

There is every chance that you are not used to being photographed for several hours, let alone experiencing a couple photoshoot in such an emotional moment.

Part of my role as a wedding photographer is to help you relax and ease that pressure so that you can enjoy your wedding as fully as possible. And the best way to feel relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera is often to do a first session before the wedding day itself.

A couple photoshoot before the wedding helps you get used to the camera. It also allows us to get to know one another better, even if we have already spent time talking beforehand during our meetings.

Building confidence in front of the camera

One concern I hear often from brides-to-be, and sometimes from grooms as well, is the fear of not being photogenic. The fear of not looking good enough, not knowing what to do, or not looking like the people you see on my website and social media.

I say it often: anyone can look photogenic in the right circumstances, and a wedding is a very good one. People who love one another are always beautiful to photograph. And there is absolutely no reason to imagine that your photographs will be any less successful than the ones you see in my gallery.

But hearing that is one thing. Seeing it in photographs is far more powerful. The images you receive from your engagement session will show you, and even prove to you, that you too can look beautiful, natural and completely yourself in front of the lens. They will help you approach your wedding photographs with much more confidence.

All it takes is being with the person you love.

An engagement session gives you more freedom than your couple portraits on the wedding day

On your wedding day, there will of course be a moment set aside for couple portraits. Fifteen or twenty minutes that allow you to take a breath, spend a little time together, recharge slightly before returning to your guests, and of course come away with wonderful photographs.

But by definition, couple portraits on the wedding day are fairly constrained: time is limited because you will want to get back to your guests; the location is often dictated by the venue or the reception setting; and the timing has to fit within the flow of the day. An engagement session, on the other hand, gives you far more freedom.

Choosing a location that feels like you

Would you like your session by the sea, in one of the calanques near Cassis? In a lavender field near Aix-en-Provence? In a traditional Provençal village? In the streets of Marseille? All of that is possible.

Provence offers an incredible variety of landscapes and atmospheres that work beautifully for an engagement shoot. And if you are not yet sure where to go, tell me about it: I know many places that can host a session that feels aesthetic, natural and true to your story.

Choosing the right time for the light

In general, photographers love to organise couple sessions during the golden hour, meaning the hour before sunset or just after sunrise. But that is not a strict rule. In autumn and winter, for example, daylight often remains softer for longer, which makes it possible to plan an engagement session at more flexible times of day.

You may also be drawn to the idea of a night session. It is a slightly more technical option, requiring lighting equipment and unfolding in a less spontaneous way, but it can create a truly unique cinematic feel.

Imagining a more personal and creative session

Perhaps you already have a particular idea in mind. Perhaps you are dreaming of something fashion-led, editorial, cinematic, or on the contrary something very simple and spontaneous. Perhaps you have seen a visual world that speaks to you and that you would love to adapt to your own story.

Tell me about it. Tell me more about what draws you in, the kind of images you love, and the emotions you would like to find in your own photographs. From there, I can help you imagine a session that feels genuinely personal, coherent and true to who you are.

When should you plan an engagement session?

In my view, the ideal time to organise an engagement session is between six months and one year before the wedding. That gives us time to choose the location and atmosphere that suit you best, while ensuring that you receive your photographs in time for your invitations.

But of course, you can also arrange it later than that. It is your wedding, and your choices are what matter most.

Where should you have an engagement session in Provence?

This is probably the big question. But before choosing a location, the first thing to ask is what kind of atmosphere you want for your pre-wedding couple photographs. If you like urban and contemporary settings, we could imagine a session in Marseille, around La Joliette for example. If you are dreaming of something softer and more pastoral, the hills around Aix-en-Provence and the landscapes facing Sainte-Victoire offer a beautiful backdrop. If you are looking for something rawer and wilder, the calanques of La Ciotat can be a wonderful choice. And if you prefer the atmosphere of a Provençal village, places such as Auriol or Le Tholonet work beautifully.

Is an engagement session right for you?

An engagement session is not an obligation. You can absolutely have beautiful couple photographs on your wedding day without going through this step. But it can be particularly valuable if you recognise yourself in certain situations: you do not feel especially comfortable in front of the camera, you are worried about not being photogenic, you would love images for your invitations, or you simply want to enjoy a first moment together before the big day, in a setting that is calmer and more flexible.

It is also ideal if you care as much about the experience as you do about the final result. If you want to understand my way of working more clearly, build trust before your wedding, and approach the day itself with more calm and confidence, then an engagement session is very likely an excellent idea. On the other hand, if you do not feel the need to have photographs before the wedding and would rather keep the whole experience focused on the wedding day itself, it is not essential. What matters most is that your plans feel true to you.

Let’s talk about it

An engagement session is not only about creating beautiful photographs before the wedding. It also gives you a moment together in the middle of the planning process, helps you feel more confident in front of the camera, and allows me to support you more effectively on the wedding day itself. It is a gentle, flexible and bespoke pause, in a place that feels like you, to create natural, elegant and deeply personal images.

FAQ – Engagement session in Provence: why have one before your wedding?

What is an engagement session in Provence?

An engagement session, sometimes also called an engagement shoot, is a couple photoshoot that takes place before the wedding. In Provence, it allows you to create natural and elegant images in a setting that feels true to you, whether that means a Provençal village, the seaside, vineyards, pine forests or a more urban backdrop in Aix-en-Provence, Marseille or Toulon.

Why have an engagement session before your wedding?

An engagement session is, of course, a lovely way to create beautiful photographs before the wedding, but it also has a very practical purpose. It helps you feel more comfortable in front of the camera, get to know your photographer better, prepare your invitations or wedding website, and approach the wedding day with more confidence and peace of mind.

What is the difference between an engagement session and a classic couple photoshoot?

The main difference is that an engagement session is part of your wedding plans. It is not only about creating beautiful images of the two of you, but also about taking a first step towards your wedding photographs. It helps you discover how your photographer works and feel much more relaxed when it comes to your couple portraits on the wedding day itself.

When should you plan an engagement session before the wedding?

Ideally, an engagement session takes place between six months and one year before the wedding. That gives you time to choose the right location and atmosphere, while making sure your photographs are ready in time for your invitations, save the dates or wedding stationery. That said, it can absolutely be arranged later if that suits your plans better.

Where should you have an engagement session in Provence?

That depends entirely on the atmosphere you want for your photographs. In Provence, you can imagine an engagement session in the calanques, by the sea, in the vineyards, in a traditional village, in the hills, or in a more contemporary urban setting. Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Toulon, Cassis, La Ciotat, Le Tholonet, Puyloubier and the wider Pays d’Aix all offer very different backdrops, which makes it possible to create a session that genuinely reflects your story.

Can you have an engagement session in Aix-en-Provence, Marseille or Toulon?

Yes, absolutely. Aix-en-Provence is ideal for couples who love elegant, light-filled and distinctly Provençal settings. Marseille works beautifully for something more urban, more Mediterranean or more contrast-driven. Toulon and its surroundings can be perfect if you are looking for something softer, more coastal or a little more intimate. The right location depends above all on the atmosphere you want your photographs to have.

How long does an engagement session last?

An engagement session usually lasts between one and two hours. That gives us enough time to walk a little, explore different parts of the location, allow you to relax naturally, and create photographs that feel fluid and unforced. The goal is not to rush through a list of poses, but to create an enjoyable experience that feels personal and true to you.

Is an engagement session worth it if we do not feel comfortable in front of the camera?

Yes, and that is often when it is most valuable. Many couples worry that they are not photogenic or feel nervous about being photographed. An engagement session helps reassure you, shows you that you do not need to be models to have beautiful photographs, and allows you to approach your wedding pictures with much more confidence.

Can we use our engagement session photographs for our invitations?

Yes, absolutely. Engagement session photographs are perfect for invitations, save the dates, your wedding website or certain decorative elements on the day itself. They bring a much more personal feel to your wedding than generic visuals and help create a coherent visual identity from the very beginning of your plans.

What should we wear for an engagement session in Provence?

The most important thing is to choose outfits that feel comfortable, work well together and suit the location you have chosen. Well-cut clothes in harmonious tones usually work beautifully. For an engagement session in Provence, it can also be helpful to adapt your outfits to the atmosphere of the place, whether you are choosing the seaside, a village in the Pays d’Aix or an urban setting in Marseille.

What happens if it rains on the day of the engagement session?

That depends on the weather and on the atmosphere you want. Light rain can sometimes add a great deal of charm to a couple photoshoot, but if the conditions are likely to make the experience uncomfortable or inconsistent with your plans, the simplest option is often to postpone. The idea is always to protect both your comfort and the quality of the experience.

Is an engagement session essential before the wedding?

No, not at all. It is perfectly possible to have beautiful couple photographs on the wedding day without doing an engagement session first. But it can be especially valuable if you would like photographs before the wedding, want images for your invitations, hope to feel more at ease with your photographer, or simply want to enjoy a first quiet moment together before the day itself.

Why choose a wedding photographer based in Provence for your engagement session?

Choosing a wedding photographer based in Provence can make a real difference. A local photographer knows the light, the seasons, the travel times, the locations that work particularly well, and the practical realities of the region. Whether you are dreaming of a session in Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Toulon, Cassis, La Ciotat or a Provençal village, that local knowledge helps create a session that feels smoother, more coherent and more personal.
